African Telecom Leader MTN Group Ltd. Sees Unprecedented Growth in Full-Year Earnings
MTN Group Ltd., Africa’s largest network operator, has announced that its full-year earnings are expected to more than quadruple, driven by significant improvements in its Nigerian and Ghanaian operations. This remarkable growth is a testament to the company’s strategic vision and its commitment to expanding its presence in key African markets.
Strategic Acquisition of IHS Towers
In a move that is set to further bolster its position in the African telecom landscape, MTN has announced plans to take control of IHS Towers, one of Africa’s largest independent tower companies, in a deal valued at $6.2 billion. This acquisition will not only strengthen MTN’s infrastructure but also enable the company to better serve its customers and partners across the continent. According to MTN CEO Ralph Mupita, this transaction presents a unique opportunity for the company to buy back its towers and reinforce its commitment to being a partner for progress in the nation states where it operates.
Ghana’s Sweeping Reforms to Boost Gold Production and Foreign-Exchange Earnings
In a related development, the Ghanaian government has announced plans to channel approximately 127 metric tons of gold per year from artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) into official trade under revised sector reforms. This move is expected to boost foreign-exchange earnings and stem smuggling losses. The Ghana Gold Board will be required to buy a minimum of 2.45 tons of ASM gold weekly, with the goal of consolidating purchases into a formal pipeline targeting more than $20 billion of annual inflows. This initiative follows a surge in ASM output, driven by soaring gold prices and Ghana’s creation of the GoldBod in 2025, which helped to lift national production to about 186 tons that year.
